Aries + Loki | Rainy Rattlesnake Lake Pet Portraits

Rainy Mountain Lake + Cute Dogs = Heaven

Anyone who lives in the PNW would probably guess that winter is my “quietest” time for sessions, but I’ve noticed a trend this year that has me absolutely giddy. More and more I’m being contacted about doing snow sessions or wanting a moody “very PNW” photoshoot, and I am HERE FOR IT.

I love doing photoshoots in the winter in the PNW. Wondering why?

  • Moody weather means we might get fog or pretty water droplets in the air

  • The trails, lakes, and rivers are SO much quieter. This is perfect for our reactive friends!

  • Water levels tend to be lower, so lake locations that don’t have enough shoreline for photos in the summer become available, like Rattlesnake Lake, which shows off with massive old growth tree stumps every fall and winter.

  • SNOW! Our snow season is fleeting in the winter in western Washington, and there’s something magical about capturing the bright, crisp, cozy vibes that come with a snowy mountain photoshoot, like this recent session at Gold Creek Pond.

Pet Portraits at Rattlesnake Lake

Most people know about the Rattlesnake Ledge hike, a short 2 mile RT trail up to an incredible lookout over the mountains and Rattlesnake Lake below. This is a fun hike, but it’s narrow and very crowded, and doesn’t make for good portraits. The real gem in this area is Rattlesnake Lake in the fall and winter. The lake levels go down, exposing massive tree stumps from when the reservoir was created, and giving your dog lots of places to hide, run, and climb. There is also a small fern forest along the trail, and we all know how I feel about dog portraits with ferns.

This session with Aries + Loki was quintessential Pacific Northwest. We got rain. We got clouds. We got fog. And then we got a rainbow?! It was the perfect day. Aries, the stoic senior, took his time exploring the lake bed, lovingly staring at his mom and the snacks she brought, and generally behind a handsome dude in the rain. Loki was true to his namesake: chaos incarnate. I laughed so much during this session as he chased sticks, splashed around the lake, and sang me the song of his people. Their mom had the best day ever making memories with her two favorite boys, and her custom album that we made together is the perfect way to keep that memory fresh, snuggling up with them on the couch and enjoying their lake day memory made tangible.
