Mountain Pet Portraits at Artist Point, North Cascades
Artist Point in the Mt. Baker Wilderness of the North Cascades is the most beautiful place in the entire state of Washington, and you’ll never convince me otherwise!
The mountain views are unmatched, the evergreens and wildflowers are stunning, and it’s all accessible with short hikes, an easy drive, and a really cute coffee shop in town to grab a bite and some caffeine on your way up to or after your photo session.
The best part? It’s perfect for every almost every season, depending on your adventure. My personal favorite is early fall, but we’ll get to that.
Winter is perfect for snow absolutely everywhere! This location gets deep snow every year, so the road up to the top closes. The stunning Bagley Lakes trail starts where the winter road closure is, so it’s the perfect option if you want mountains and snow but don’t want to hike 6 miles to the top. There’s lots of snow in Spring as well, but the melting makes it dangerous and the weather is really unpredictable.
Summer is perfect for blue skies and clear views, but it’s incredibly crowded even on weekdays. I always recommend an early morning start for summer sessions!
Fall is the best of both worlds. You can get clear skies, wildflowers are in bloom, sometimes there’s a little dusting of snow on the mountain tops, and the crowds have thinned. I go up to Artist Point every year with my own dogs in the fall, and will be offering client sessions this year, too!
Pet Portraits at Mt. Baker’s Artist Point
There are a couple trail options when doing pet portraits at Artist Point. My personal favorites are:
Artist Ridge to Huntoon Point. This hike is 1.2 miles round trip, with the option to keep going onto little side trails for more privacy and views. With elevation gain at just 200 ft this trail is perfect for puppies and senior dogs alike. The mountain views are absolutely unmatched from this trail and in early fall the wildflowers start (typically in late July). In late fall the heather starts to turn the most spectacular fall colors (think oranges, maroons, pinks) with snow-capped mountains in the background. This trail is perfect for summer and fall. The road to this trail typically closes the first week of October and then it’s a 6 mile RT hike up to the trailhead.
Bagley Lakes. This hike is 2 miles round trip and follows a gorgeous river feeding from a lake at the middle point of the trail. This trail also features a stunning arched stone bridge, which is perfect for pet portraits! I like to do the posed “family portrait” style shots in this spot, and then get all the fun mountain dog adventure shots on the rest of the trail. Any water loving pup will love this trail as the river bed is shallow and easy to maneuver (but cold!). This trail is perfect for summer, fall, and winter. In winter it’s a snowshoe trail!
