West Seattle Pet Portraits in the Ferns with Zeke

Resilience in the Ferns: A Sunset Photo Session with Zeke at Lincoln Park
By a Tacoma Pet Photographer Who Knows the Power of a Dog’s Story

Some dogs don’t just walk through life—they persevere through it, tail wagging and heart wide open. That’s exactly the spirit Zeke brought to our sunset session at Lincoln Park in West Seattle. With only one eye and three legs, this senior sweetheart is the definition of resilience, and as a photographer with an epic soft spot for seniors, I was honored to capture his quiet strength among the ferns and evergreens of one of Seattle’s most peaceful coastal parks.

Lincoln Park is a gem for outdoor pet photography—especially for dogs who need calm terrain, soft forest floors, and gentle ocean breezes. I brought my trusty off-roading wagon from Costco so we could load Zeke up with a soft blanket and comfy bed to help him navigate the park without stressing his mind or his body. He LOVED riding in the wagon! His mom and dad (and ME!) couldn’t stop laughing about how content he was being a king in his chariot.

As Zeke padded through trails lined with mossy trees and sword ferns, he moved slowly but surely, every step echoing years of experience and survival. He had recently undergone a rear leg amputation, but you wouldn’t know it by the way he lifted his head to sniff the air or leaned into his mom for reassurance.

And oh, the bond with his mom. It was visible in every look they shared, in the way she carried rubbed the soft part of his ears just right, in how he leaned into her with deep relaxing breaths at every moment he could, in how she knelt in the dirt without hesitation so she could wrap her arms around his shoulders. These moments—these soft, unspoken connections—are what make pet photography sessions with senior dogs so profoundly special.

As we worked our way through the ferns, golden hour painted the evergreens in warm light. Zeke stood rested quietly beneath a canopy of trees while I clicked away, capturing a true PNW dog in his element. He didn’t need to do tricks or sit perfectly—he just needed to be there, soaking in the evening beside the person who had given him his second chance.

Being an outdoor pet photographer in the Tacoma and Seattle area means I get to document the real, raw, and beautiful stories of pets like Zeke—dogs who may have lost a part of themselves physically, but whose spirits shine brighter than ever. These sessions aren’t about perfection; they’re about presence. And Zeke was fully, magnificently present.
