There’s nothing quite like photographing a husky with too much energy and zero chill at one of the most scenic lakes in the Pacific Northwest. Recently, I had the absolute joy (and workout) of doing a sunset pet photography session with a gorgeous copper-eyed husky named Spike at Rattlesnake Lake—and let me tell you, he brought the drama, the zoomies, and the fluff.
As a Tacoma pet photographer who specializes in outdoor sessions, I’m always scouting for locations that offer both natural beauty and enough space for pets to let loose. Rattlesnake Lake is a favorite for a reason: towering evergreens, clear water, and mountain views that catch golden hour just right. It’s the dream backdrop for Rattlesnake Lake sunset portraits—and it was the perfect setting for Luna’s high-energy personality.
From the moment his paws hit the trail, Spike was on a mission: chase all the balls, run everywhere, and look stunning while doing it. We started with some action shots near the shoreline, where he splashed through the shallows, tongue out, tail flying. Then we moved to the stumps—those iconic weathered tree trunks poking out of the lakebed—where he struck some majestic “dog-wolf-queen-of-the-mountain” poses like a seasoned pro.
The key to a successful session like this is leaning into the energy. I never force stiff poses or expect a dog to sit still for long. As an outdoor pet photographer, I know that natural movement and genuine moments create the most memorable images. So we played. We chased. I may or may not have barked (professionally, of course). And when the sun dipped low and the sky turned cotton candy pink, Spike finally slowed down just long enough for a few epic silhouette shots against the lake.
