There’s something extra special about photographing a senior dog. Every dog is different, but especially seniors! Sure, they all might be a little grey in the face, and maybe move a little slower, but I have learned one important thing working with so many senior dogs: expect the unexpected! I’ve had senior dogs get the zoomies, jump off logs, decide to go swimming for the first time right after their guardian says, “Oh, they hate water!” and also decide, “No, I’m done with my photos, let’s just take a nap in the sun.” Senior dogs are some of the funniest, happiest dogs out there and photographing them brings me so much joy.
Shooting with a senior pup is a bit like hanging out with your favorite grandparent: you don’t rush it and you’re going to just do what they want to do. Recently, I had the absolute joy of doing a photoshoot with Watson, the sweetest old man who walked onto the scene like a seasoned professional. We moved at Watson’s pace, which was somewhere between “accidental swimming going after a stick” and “sniff that same bush for the sixth time.” And that’s the beauty of it. No pressure. Letting him be silly, letting him chase a stick, letting him get nice and muddy and then snuggle up with his mom and dad. A gorgeous mountain vista, lots of snuggles, and a handful of treats (okay, maybe two handfuls) set the stage for some truly heartfelt portraits.
A Love Letter in Photographs
Senior dogs have the eyes. You know the ones. They don’t just look at you—they look through you. Into your soul. Into your snack stash. Into your camera lens like they know exactly what you’re trying to capture and they’re here to help. And sometimes? Sometimes it’s pure chaos, and I truly wouldn’t have it any other way.
One of the most beautiful parts of photographing older dogs is letting go of perfection. The wonky ear, the cloudy eyes, the slow shuffle—those are the things that make them who they are. We leaned into it. The slightly crooked smile? Captured. The patch of fur that doesn’t quite lie flat anymore? Cherished. Every gray hair? A badge of honor.
That is one of the best things about hiring a professional pet photographer to take portraits of you and your best friend. Whether they are the perfect model, or chaos incarnate, you get to just enjoy them, enjoy their personality, and enjoy your time making memories without worrying about a phone timer, getting the right pose, or missing a moment because you’re messing with your camera. You get to be in the photos and in the moment.
Watson’s final gallery didn’t just show a dog—it told his story. A life well-lived. A bond between him and his humans that has only grown stronger with time. And yes, there were a few tears when the photos were delivered. Happy tears. Nostalgic tears. The kind of tears that remind you to hug your dog a little tighter tonight.
