There’s something truly magical about photographing senior dogs—the wisdom in their eyes, the softness of their steps, and the quiet bond they share with their people. Recently, I had the honor of photographing Ramona, a sweet senior pup, during a golden-hour session on the Kitsap Peninsula. With the ferns rustling behind her and tall evergreens swaying overhead, Ramona and her people reminded me why I love being a pet photographer near Tacoma and Gig Harbor—these sessions are more than portraits, they’re love letters.
We wandered slowly along fern-lined paths near a beautiful Gig Harbor park, where Ramona could explore at her own pace. She paused often to sniff mossy logs, brush her tail against sword ferns, and tilt her nose toward the cool forest air. Every movement carried the grace of a dog who has lived a full life—steady, gentle, and deeply loved.
Her mom and I laughed as Ramona trotted a little faster when she caught the scent of snacks in my pocket (my go to freeze dried minnows!)—proving that no matter how many birthdays have passed, food motivation never fades. But what struck me most was the way Ramona’s humans watched her with such deep tenderness, kneeling beside her in the grass to hold her face and whisper lovingly to her, with a gentle hand rubbing her soft ears. Those quiet, heartfelt interactions are what make pet photography sessions so meaningful.
As the sun slipped lower, golden light filtered through the evergreens, wrapping Ramona in a soft glow. She rested for a moment on a mossy log, staring softly at her humans as if to say, this is enough, just being here together. That image—dog, humans, and forest in harmony—felt like the truest portrait of all.
