Mt. Rainier Pet Photography | Skookum Flats Hike
Are Pets Allowed at Mt. Rainier? No, but that’s okay!
Pets aren’t allowed on any of the trails in Mt. Rainier National Park (most National Parks don’t allow dogs) but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a fun adventure nearby! Mt. Rainier National Park is surrounded by the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. The best part about National Forest trails? Almost all of them allow dogs and they’re perfect for professional pet portraits! One of my favorite areas outside of Mt. Rainier National Park for dogs is the trail system near Chinook Pass. If you’re visiting Mt. Rainier area with your dog, be sure to check out some of the dog-friendly hikes nearby! Some favorite hikes in particular are:
Sheep Lake (Chinook Pass closes before this trailhead in the winter so it is inaccessible for the winter months)
Crystal Mountain (the trails at Crystal Mountain are open to dogs in the summer months. They can also ride the gondola up and down!). Check out this page for more information about dog-friendly activities at Crystal Mountain.
Pet Portraits at Skookum Flats
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Ladybug and her mom at Skookum Flats to capture her in her favorite setting: on the trail. We got lucky with a fresh dusting of snow the morning of her session, covering the ferns and salal with an icy dusting that made us feel like we were in Narnia. Skookum Flats is a quieter trail, which is perfect for pet portraits. We had the entire thing to ourselves on that snowy weekday morning. The elevation gain is low, so this is also a perfect trail for seniors and puppies.
Ladybug had an absolute blast on the trail, running up and down, watching the snow fall, and getting zoomies when the mood struck! One of my favorite things about doing pet portraits for high energy breeds is capturing their truest personality when they’re allowed to just be themselves. Don’t want to sit still? Great news, you don’t have to! Want to chase a stick? Even greater news, I’ll help you find the best one!
I was able to capture the most perfect portraits of Ladybug zooming down the trail with the snow softly falling on her fluffy black and white fur, and, once she’d had her fill of running, some of the sweetest portraits of her and her mom cuddled up in the snow enjoying a perfect day on the trail.
When you work with me you get to be in the photos and in the moment, forgetting about the camera or worrying about getting things “perfect.” You get to enjoy a special adventure with your best friend, and I’ll be there by your side to capture it all.
