Muddy Paws and One Very Good Dog: A Pet Portrait Session at Bagley Lakes Trail
If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you mix alpine lakes, dramatic mountain views, and a dog who absolutely deserves a modeling contract, allow me to introduce you to my recent pet portrait session at Bagley Lakes Trail in the North Cascades. Spoiler alert: there were wagging tails, a cute scruffy boy, and the best luck ever with the perfect timing for our session in between early-season storms.
Bagley Lakes Trail is one of those places that feels like it was designed specifically for dogs who love to explore and humans who love saying things like, “Okay wow, this doesn’t even look real.” Nestled near Mount Baker Ski Area, this trail offers big scenery with relatively minimal effort—which is great news for pups who want to sniff everything and people who want epic photos without a full-on expedition.
North Cascades Pet Portraits
The Bagley Lakes Trail is a short, relatively flat loop trail that winds along a gorgeous river with a stunning lake at the end, complete with a stone arch bridge and huge views.
Depending on the time of year, you’ll find:
Snow-dusted peaks (even in early summer!)
Calm, reflective water that basically begs to be photographed
Wildflowers popping off like they’re auditioning for a calendar shoot
It’s also a fantastic option for dogs who are newer to hiking, senior pups, or anyone who wants the big mountain views without a 3+ mile hike.
In the summer months from July to early October you can drive up past Bagley Lakes to an even more incredible trail system at Artist Point, with 360 views of the surrounding mountains, including the stunning Mt. Shuksan. The road closes due to snow so the window for sessions at the very top is short. The good news is that if you miss the window, Bagley Lakes is gorgeous and accessible year-round!
Our four-legged star of the day, Gustav, took his job very seriously—pausing to sniff every breeze, sit politely on cue, and occasionally break into zoomies because, well… mountains. His moms showed up in matching outfits (HOW CUTE????) and a rainbow bandana for him (EVEN CUTER????) and I just about fell in love with all three of them. I had so much fun hiking this trail, watching them experience it together for the first time, and capturing their love for each other.
One of the things I love about sessions in the mountains is how naturally they unfold. There’s room to wander, pause, and let dogs just be dogs. We took breaks by the water, captured some classic “dog looking off into the distance like they’re contemplating life” shots, and laughed through a few moments of wet paws and muddy noses.
Those in-between moments—tongues out, ears flopping, eyes sparkling—are always the real magic.
