Backup, Chaos, and the Bond That Shines Brighter Than a PNW Sunset

Every once in a while, I get to photograph a session that feels less like “posing for the camera” and more like witnessing pure connection. That’s exactly how it felt when I spent the evening with Backup, Chaos, and their incredible mom at a riverbank framed by mountain views and towering evergreens. The backdrop? A perfect Pacific Northwest sunset that painted the sky in golds and pinks. The heart of it all? The undeniable bond between a woman and her dogs.
Backup, the elder pup, is steady, mellow, and always watching with soulful eyes. He reminded me so much of my own boy—truly obsessed with mom, and would probably wear her skin if he could. LOL! Then there’s Chaos—who absolutely lives up to his name. Wild splashes in the shallows, zoomies through the sand, big goofy grins that made us laugh until our cheeks hurt. More than once he knocked his mom over in his exuberance to give her as many kisses as possible. Together, the two of them balanced each other perfectly—one grounding, one lifting, both completely devoted.
As a Tacoma pet photographer, I love these kinds of sessions because they show the many ways dogs weave themselves into our lives. They are not just pets—they are confidants, companions, and constants. Backup’s gentle presence mirrored his mom’s steady strength, while Chaos brought out her laughter and playful side. Watching them together was like watching three souls in harmony, reflecting the many layers of love between women and their dogs.
When the sun slipped behind the mountains, we paused at the river’s edge. Backup and Chaos cuddled up next to mom as the sky turned a gorgeous warm yellow glow, and the slowly moving river glittered in the last light of day. It is the honor of my life to witness and capture these sweet moments between pets and their people, when the world quiets and life slows down and you get to just be in the moment with your best friend.
The truth is, these are the moments that matter. Not perfectly posed portraits, but the ones where a woman feels seen with her dogs by her side. Where her love, loyalty, and joy are reflected right back at her through their eyes.
